Your Local Salmo Moving Team
Salmo sits at the crossroads of the South Kootenay, where Highway 3 and Highway 6 meet along the Salmo River. The village itself has older homes and character houses on quiet streets within walking distance of the shops, but most Salmo moves happen out of town: acreages and rural homes along the river, cabins and homesteads toward Ymir and Erie, and properties up long gravel driveways where the truck has to be planned as carefully as the load.
Karma Moving is a Kootenay-owned crew based in Castlegar, about 40 minutes away, and Salmo sits in the middle of the area we cover: Nelson to the north, Trail and Castlegar to the west, and Creston over the Kootenay Pass. We handle local moves around Salmo and long-distance moves to the Okanagan, the Lower Mainland, and Vancouver Island.

Why Salmo Chooses Karma Moving
A crossroads village with rural properties all around it. Here is what you get with our crews.
At the Highway Junction
Salmo connects to Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, and Creston. We plan the route for whichever direction you are moving.
Rural Properties, Planned
Acreages, gravel driveways, and outbuildings are checked before move day so the right vehicle shows up.
Kootenay Pass Experience
Moves toward Creston cross one of the highest highway passes in Canada. We watch conditions and plan around closures.
Village Homes Handled Carefully
Older homes in the village get floor runners, padded doorways, and careful work on narrow stairs.
Kootenay Owned
We are a local business, and the same crew loads and delivers your move.
Clear Estimates
Every estimate explains the crew, vehicle, and services before move day, so you know what to expect.

Salmo is where Highway 3 and Highway 6 meet, so every move here starts with a direction. Pick yours to see the route and what the season means for it.
- Nelson: Highway 6 north, about 35 min from Salmo. Highway 6 follows the Salmo River north through Ymir to Nelson.
- Castlegar: Highway 3 west, about 40 min from Salmo. Highway 3 west over the Bombi summit to Castlegar.
- Trail or Fruitvale: Highway 3 and 3B, about 35 min from Salmo. Highway 3 west, then Highway 3B through Fruitvale and Montrose to Trail.
- Creston: Highway 3 east over the Kootenay Pass, about 1 hr 10 min from Salmo. The Salmo-Creston highway climbs over the Kootenay Pass, one of the highest highway passes in Canada. Winter brings snow, chain-up conditions, and avalanche-control closures.
- Ymir or Erie: Highway 6 or Highway 3, about 15 min from Salmo. Short drives within the Salmo area; access to rural properties is usually the main planning point.
- Okanagan or the coast: Highway 3 west, a full day or more from Salmo. Long-distance moves head west on Highway 3 over the Bombi and Paulson summits.
Approximate drive times without delays; check DriveBC on the day. Nothing you enter here is sent or saved.
Moving Around Salmo
The village and the rural areas around it each move differently. Pick yours.
Salmo village
Older homes, character houses, and small lots on quiet streets near the shops and the school.
Narrow stairs in older homes and street parking; short carries in most cases.
Along the Salmo River
Rural homes and acreages on the river flats north and south of the village.
Long gravel driveways, outbuildings, and soft ground in spring; we confirm truck access ahead of time.
Ymir
A small historic village north on Highway 6, with older homes and cabins.
Older buildings, steep lots, and winter snow.
Erie and the west
Rural properties and homesteads west of Salmo toward the Bombi summit.
Long driveways and remote access; we plan the vehicle for the lane.
Hidden Creek and the back roads
Cabins and off-grid properties on forest roads around the valley.
Seasonal roads and tight turnarounds; tell us about the access when you book.
When to Move in Salmo
Mountain passes, spring thaw, and summer smoke all shape a Salmo moving day. Here is what we plan around.
Winter, November to April
Snow and ice are normal here. We keep winter dates flexible, especially for moves over the Kootenay Pass.
Kootenay Pass closures
Avalanche-control work on the pass can close Highway 3 for hours. We check before we leave and plan around it.
Spring thaw
Gravel driveways and rural lanes can be soft in spring. We check access before the move.
Summer and wildfire season
Summer is the easiest time for access, but smoke and highway closures can happen. We watch DriveBC.
Fall
September and October are a good window: mild weather, open passes, and easier booking.
Book a few weeks ahead
Our crew covers the whole region, so book two to four weeks ahead, especially in summer.

Salmo Moving FAQs
Do you move homes in and around Salmo?
Yes. We move village homes, rural properties, and acreages around Salmo, Ymir, and Erie, as well as moves to Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, and Creston.
Can you get a truck up a long gravel driveway?
Usually, yes. Tell us about the driveway, any tight turns, and where a truck can park, and we will choose the right vehicle and plan a longer carry if needed.
What if the Kootenay Pass is closed on moving day?
We check DriveBC before we leave. If a closure or storm makes the pass unsafe, we talk with you about adjusting the timing, and your belongings stay secured in the truck.
